Poncheta Archer

Poncheta Ruth Archer made her entrance into the world on February 25th 1956 in Claremont St. Ann, Jamaica the fourth child and second daughter to Florette and Lemuel Archer in Claremont St. Ann Jamaica. She was a rosy and beautiful baby, and would have gotten the name Rosie but her Sister who came before was given that name. Poncheta received her formal education at the Seventh Day Basic School Claremont St. Ann, and later attended Claremont All Age School. She went to Walkerswood Craft Centre where she learnt and later mastered the craft of basket weaving, roping, crocheting. I am told she made the best slippers and hand books. She practically lived at the town’s shoemaker. She would develop her love for administration and commerce when she was employed as Admin assistant to the community Doctor. She moved to Kingston to attend Durham College of Commerce, where she learned typing, short-hand and book-keeping amongst other things. She was a whiz at typing, topping that course in her studies she would practice on her Olympia type-writer which was purchased by her father on one of his trips overseas. She later attended Leon School of Beauty Culture, where she specialized in cosmetology. Eventually Poncheta owned and operated her own cosmetology studio in Kingston. During that time, she met Truman Lawrence and welcomed sons, Dewayne and Leighton. Several years later, Poncheta immigrated to the United States where she met and married Maurice Lewis. The couple would welcome another son, Ammiel, into their home a few years after. While living in Fort Lauderdale, Poncheta worked for Heartland of Boca as a Certified Nursing Assistant for over 20 years. She was very dedicated and caring. When she wasn’t busy working, Poncheta enjoyed cooking and baking in her spare time. She was a wonderful cook, and her Christmas cakes and rock cakes were priceless. Poncheta is survived by her mother, Florette Archer; children, Dewayne Lawrence, Leighton Lawrence and Ammiel Lewis; siblings, Phillip Archer, Samuel Archer, Patricia Archer, Delroy Archer, Lemore Archer, and Heloise Beale, nee Archer. She is preceded in death by her father, Lemuel Archer, and sister, Rose Brooks, nee Archer of Jamaica.
