Thomas Coutain

In loving memory of Thomas Coutain also known as “Popo” and to some “Milo”. He was born Wednesday, September 16, 1942 in Grand Anse, St. George’s, Grenada and passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the age of 78 in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, United States of America. Thomas is survived by his son, Melvaughn Marinus (Neville) Coutain, of St. George’s, Grenada; his daughters, Sandra Coutain Penny and Lydia Coutain both in New Jersey and his adopted son, Francis Williams of Titusville, Florida. His surviving siblings are: Claire Roberts of Ocala, Florida, Augustina (Tiney) Coutain Jackson of Boston, Massachusetts, Roilez (Roy) Coutain of Grand Anse, St. George’s, Grenada and Monica Coutain of Brooklyn, New York. His late siblings are: Olive Coutain, Bonita (Eleta) Williams, Ivy (Tildy) Green, Turner Coutain and Rocelyn Coutain. He leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Thomas Coutain was born in St. George’s, Grenada, West Indies to the late Millicent and Aman Coutain. As a young man, he migrated to Trinidad and lived in La Puerta Avenue, Diego Martin and moved to Tobago Road, Lendore Village in Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago. As a teenager he worked as a yard boy, and was very handy with a hammer and did odd jobs working as a carpenter. He also worked as a porter loading and unloading trucks. He loved riding his bicycle and progressed to owning and riding a motorbike. He met the late, Magna Charles and they had a son, Melvaughn Marinus (Neville) Coutain. He lived in Trinidad for about 10 years. He returned back to Grenada and married Yvonne, his now ex-wife and had 2 daughters, Sandra Coutain Penny and Lydia Coutain who both resides in New Jersey, USA. He came to the United States seeking better opportunities; while there he continued in the construction field. He settled in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida where he purchased a two-bedrooms condominium. He loved family, especially his mother, the late Millicent Coutain and would do anything to protect her/them. Although he loved his family, he was a strong disciplinarian that expressed his emotions in ways that others may not have liked. He was meticulous about cleaning; he was sarcastic and quick witted. Some found him to be very secretive. He loved to preserve fruits and was a great cook and taught his nieces how to cook many special dishes. He loved making mango stew, mango chutney, sorrel jam and chana. Did you know that his favorite foods were oxtail, cow foot, red beans with rice? He succumbed to many illnesses and his niece, Joanna (Coutain) Eldridge of Orlando, Florida ensured that his last days on earth was comfortable. Joanna went above and beyond to ensure that he was properly cared for. He received around the clock care by Hospice and from his live-in caregiver, Tricia Pugh. Thomas was very generous to many always willing to help others.
